I have often wondered, since the oil is still flowing into the Gulf! if they can send a cutter large enough to chop through that pipe, why can’t they crimp the opening of the darn pipe like a straw to reduce the flow. Crimp it, then weld it closed; ah hell that hole is producing gas  as well. Don’t know if it would be possible to weld that shut or not, might just blow up??? but would it blow? Well was just a thought, since they are using robots to do the work, if they can cut it they can crimp it.
