Let them know what you’re all about when going after that job. Advertise yourself and be firm in what you are looking for. Write your resume like you mean it, be specific in your Objective. First let me bring up this point! NO ONE likes to sit and read a 5-10 page biography unless they are History majors. Like I said, be specific in your objectives from start to finish.
When it comes to work history, keep it short and to the point. Again be specific about what you have done and be sure to include your accomplishments within your area of expertise. I have found that most employers only like to look backwards 3-4 years, with your most recent employment history first. A good resume will consist of no more than 2 pages with 4 being the most, to include your education background and any special training, schooling and awards that you may have earned.
One thing, I am sure that most of you have read or maybe heard about is LSS, or better known as Lean Six & Sigma. Lean Six is not only popular with the civilian sector but is fast becoming the norm for the way our Military conducts day to day business. Lean Six was first introduced by Toyota. Toyota was looking for a way to reduce waste and increase production in their manufacturing plants, so along came Lean Six & Sigma. Some of the processes use to Lean out and improve process is through Value Stream Analysis (VSA) and Rapid Improvement Events (RIE). Well we could talk about this for a while but the point I want to make is that this is an important part of today’s workforce environment. If you want to read more about LSS, just Google and you will find thousands of pages. Along with training in Lean Six will come various steps, a Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt? I am not trying to sell Lean Six but I can assure you that if you have some training in LSS and this is reflected in your resume you will not go unnoticed. Don’t believe me, just check some of the job boards and posted jobs, do a search for Lean Six and there it is. As an example of what I am talking about, I have added a little information on this page (Sample Job Posting). This is not the complete job posting but I will tell you that this particular job starts in at around $117,000.00. This is only a sample of what is out there.
When applying with any Branch of the military services through one of their databases it is imperative that your resume contain KEYWORDS within the context of your work experience. Those keywords should be included and written to blend in with your experience and accomplishments..
